Award shows haven’t changed much over the decades. There’s always a surprise win/loss, a huge production number from the industry reigning queen/king,a memorial to those we lost, a humorous acceptance speech, a boring acceptance speech and a social, political or humanitarian call to arms speech. Goodnight, run credits.
Sounds a bit jaded, but true. Maybe award shows have become so monotonous that even the unpredictable moments are *yawn* quite predictable. If any award show seems to be the poster boy for this theory, it was the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards. Vox headlined the recap as “a mostly lackluster show”.
But still, there were a few moments that caught our eye. Not all bad, not all good. So here are the Top 5 Best, WTFs and The Absolutely Worst of the 2018 VMSs…
***3 BEST Moments ***
#5 -A Little “Finesse” Goes A Long Way Every award show is as much about how you look as it is about whether you win. Rapper Cardi B opened the show to ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as she faced the audience with a bundle wrapped in her arms in a pink blanket. No, not her month old baby, but a VMA statue. Yeah, the bit went over like a lead balloon along with Cardi’s attempt at humor. But what did come off as a winner was Cardi’s look from that dazzling red hi-low dress to the tip of her stylish shoes. The “Finesse” rapper also showed some panache while sporting a new look. Her signature pixie cut was short and tousled enough to look youthful, fresh and long enough to look elegantly timeless. Cardi B also walked a way with the night’s win as BEST NEW ARTIST.
#4-Hart, Haddish Hella Funny It’s impossible for liberals to gather in any big venue and not put politics on blast. Sometimes it was done with humor, like when Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish took center stage. Hart said this was a night to celebrate any way you want…that included taking a knee since there was “no old White man that could stop you“. With the door to the Oval Office open, Hart went on in and took some comedic shots joking at the VMAs “Things pop off, bad language, people run to the bathroom and send out crazy tweets. It’s basically like your typical day at the White House. In your face Trump suck it.”
#3 It’s Only Logic-al Border Wall Protest When you strip away all the glitz, glamour, tight choreography, music at its core is about the message. No one performer personified that better than rapper Logic. His performance of “One Day” showcased immigration groups clad in t-shirts that read “We Are All Human Beings” who linked arms and hands to form their own border wall of protest. Logic on the mic wore his own protest shirt that said simply “F*CK THE WALL”. It was easily the most important and most moving performance of the night.
*** #2 WTF Moment***
Who Won What Now? No awards show can escape that scathing moment when the audience and Twitter goes unhinged because their favorite got the shaft or the obvious winner doesn’t win. There were a couple of head scratching moments, but perhaps the biggest was in the Artist of the Year category. It was jammed packed with some heavy weights…Drake, Cardi B,Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande to name a few. None of whom walked away with the little astronaut trinket. Instead Camila Cabello beat them all for the upset of the night. The Chicago Tribune captured the shocker saying, “I can’t believe this is for me,” Cabello said Monday onstage. Neither can we.” The paper went on to point out that the defector from the group Fifth Harmony also “…achieved the unthinkable later in the show when she took home the top prize — video of the year — for “Havana.” Cabello’s song was a No. 1 hit and of the video-of-the-year nominees, “Havana” was the second-most viewed clip behind Drake’s “God’s Plan”…MTV seemed to send a message: You’re punished for not showing up and rewarded for attending.” If you think the Tribune took Cabello’s wins hard, wait ’til you see how one fan reacted…
***#1 THE ABSOLUTE WORST! Moment***
Show Some R-E-S-P-E-C-T! And finally we reach the pinnacle of the night which is simultaneously also the lowest point of the night. It was less than a week ago that that a horrible battle with pancreatic cancer snatched the Queen of Soul from this world. Tributes have poured in from all over the world and beyond thanks to NASA’s heavenly homage in the form of Asteroid Aretha. Madonna’s attempt at a tribute crashed to earth when the “Material Girl” couldn’t talk about Aretha’s accomplishments, because she was too focused on talking about her own Madonna rambled endlessly about herself to the point that viewers were tearful. Tears of missing Aretha and tears of boredom hearing Madonna’s tribute to Madonna.
