A Reel Look at The 2014 BET Award Nominees, Performers, & Host

Tis the season to be merry because it’s that magical time of the year where we get to overdose on beautiful dresses, lyrical Cyphers, and major celebrity performances. This Sunday, June 29, the BET Awards air live from Los Angeles, CA.

Before celebrities are crowed with some of the most amazing titles the music industry has to offer, let’s take a look at some of the nominees, tributes, and the most important information, who is performing!

This year’s BET Awards will be hosted by none other than comedic legend, Chris Rock. He has spent his entire career blending relevant issues in the black community and comedy, and his shenanigans have kept us laughing. We know that Rock will bring the funny.

Some past hosts have been exclusive Hollywood celebs like Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey, and Kevin Hart. This year the honor of the BET Awards host was given to comedian/actor, Chrith-7s Rock.

Once an artist has been awarded a BET award, it’s a definite brand enhancer and bragging right for the artist. Being crowned the Best Female/Pop Artist means that you are not only working the charts, but you are a certified diva.  One female version of a hustler  has remained in this category and this year is no different. Beyonce released a self-titled album that was considered a visual album. It was “visual” because each song was released with a video.  Another nominee is Def Jam-endorsed new comer Jhene Aiko. Her EP was released and well received. Her fans loved her underground feel. The third nominee regained popularity after appearing on VH1’s reality show Love And Hip Hop. Despite all the drama, K. Michelle was able to build a supportive fan base and reclaim a spot in R&B. The next nominee stole our hearts when she Pon de Replayed, unapologetic rebel Rihanna.  Tamar Braxton and Janelle Monae are also nominated. All the nominees have what it takes to win but there can only be

A special part of the evening is reserved for one person that has spent several years honing their craft, giving back and representing the black community. This is known as the BET Honoree. In the past some of the world’s most iconic artists have been saluted including Whitney Houston (2001), James Brown (2003), and most recently Charlie Wilson (2013). This year the BET Awards Honoree for Lifetime Achievement is Lionel Richie. He started his career in 1968 singing with the musical group The Commodores. He has sold more than 100-million records, has Grammys, a Golden Globe, and even an Academy Award under his belt.

And of course who can forget about the performance lineup. This year  Lil Wayne, Drake, August Alsina, Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Pharrell Williams, Mary J Blige, Robin Thicke and many more will grace the main stage. There is a great blend of old and new school artists, veterans and newbies but we think this show is going to be one of the best we’ve ever seen.
