by Ms. Black Hollywood,
Last week, TRN told you about Damon Dash accusing “Empire” creator Lee Daniels of taking his money and not paying him back. The Roc-A-Fella Records mogul claims he loaned Daniels $2 million towards a Richard Pryor biopic which never quite took off. Dash claims Daniels is a fraud who breached their contractual agreement. Dash not only filed the lawsuit, but also took his case to the court of public opinion and posted a video of him confronting Daniels…
All the publicity over the debt seems to have worked. Daniels is now saying he will pay Dash, but clarifies he doesn’t owe him one cent since it wasn’t a loan, but an investment. Entertainment news website RollingOut reports, “The acclaimed director told TMZ that after Dash put him on full-furnace blast, he sat alone and pondered hard over the situation. He quickly came to the realization that Dash helped him more in his career than any Hollywood studio ever has.” Wow, that sounds like some serious soul searching and the right thing to do…right? Well, hold my beer…the article also says,Daniels says “…he’s going to give back $2M to Dash as a gesture of gratitude — and to help Dash in his time of need because Dash helped him in his when he badly needed startup money for his films that ignited his spectacular, award-winning career.”
Daniels’ makes it sound like he’s doing Dash a favor and giving him money he doesn’t owe to help a friend who is down on his luck. But if it were really a magnanimous move, would Daniels tell others that Dash has cash flow problems and needs the money? If you were helping a friend out of concern would you tell other people? Short answer is no.
Dash hasn’t fired back a response thus far. And maybe he won’t. Maybe he just wants the money he says he’s owed no matter how much trash Daniels talks while paying it back.
