Believe it or not, many people believe that prejudice and racism towards Blacks are a myth; that racism is a two-way street even. No matter what argument you choose, it will be hard to explain this add on Craigslist…
In the section for apartments and housing for rent lies an ad for an apartment available. From the looks of it, its a pretty good deal: $920 a month for a 2-bedroom of 1100 square feet. The deal seems hard to beat until you read the catch line: No Black People.
“Please no African-Americans or kids,” the ad said.
The apartment is located at Elmwood Village at 438 Lafayette in Buffalo, New York. Elmwood Village is a high-end real estate event venue that sells luxury apartments, lofts and condo buildings.
Lafayette Lofts found out about this offensive ad and started damage control without hesitation.
“We have been made aware of a highly offensive and discriminatory listing on Craigslist offering an apartment at 438 Lafayette Ave that has listed our phone #,” The company wrote on their Facebook Page. “Please know, we have made no postings whatsoever on Craigslist and we are taking appropriate steps to report this ad.”
Discrimination towards Blacks in this country is nothing new. What’s scary is that we might be reaching a point where racism is the norm…at least in that direction.
But what if this situation was reversed? What if the add was about a luxurious apartment for rent where whites weren’t allowed? How many unlikes would Lafayette Lofts’ Facebook page suffer? Would this company still even be open for business?
This may have been a mistake on Lafayette Lofts’ end. But the culprit behind this offensive ad must be dealt with accordingly. In order to end discrimination and racism, we must do what’s right when and wherever justice is threatened.
