Are Parents to Blame for R. Kelly’s So Called Sex Cult? TRN Follow Up

by TRN Writers

Almost as soon as news broke that some parents are accusing singer R. Kelly of “brainwashing” young women and holding them hostage in a sex cult, there were young women rushing in to defend him.

TRN told you on Monday about a Buzzfeed article  saying “R. Kelly has been accused of “brainwashing” at least two aspiring female singers into sexual servitude in his homes in Chicago and Atlanta…”

The article quotes families of  young women involved with the 50 year old singer.  The parents of those young women claim  “Kelly preyed upon the women using physical and verbal abuse…” and  that the “Bump & Grind” singer “keeps at least six women, all of legal age, on a pair of his properties. There, he dictates what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep and how they engage in sexual encounters, which he reportedly records.”  A third woman has reportedly confirmed the sex cult type allegations saying she was once a part of his entourage and that they couldn’t even eat without his permission; “You have to ask for food. You have to ask to go use the bathroom … [Kelly] is a master at mind control. … He is a puppet master“.

Kelly is believed to house the young women at several properties including one  reportedly in Atlanta where her parents told reporters at a news conference that Jocelyn was being held hostage.  Today, Jocelyn is telling a different side of the story denying that Kelly is “brainwashing” her and saying she doesn’t know why her parents are accusing the singer.  Jocelyn says, “I’m 21, I’m about to be 22 in a few days and I just mainly want to say that I am in a happy place with my life and I’m not being brainwashed or anything like that. It just came to a point where it definitely has got out of hand. I’m totally fine. I’m happy where I’m at and everything is OK with me.’

How did Jocelyn even hook up with Kelly? According to the Jasmine Brand article, the mother may have helped put her daughter in this situation.  The mom posted a photo where she and both her daughters posed with Kelly last year at his studio.  The mom says she didn’t see any harm in allowing her daughter to stay around Kelly since she(the mother) was there to supervise.  Jocelyn’s father says he believes his daughter is suffering from a form of Stockholm Syndrome where victims grow to love and care about their captors.

After police investigated, they discovered that Jocelyn is no longer in Atlanta, but in Chicago—Kelly’s home city.  Her message to her family was I’m fine and leave me alone.  The daughters may be too young to know about Kelly’s history of accusations of statutory rape and child porn (though a quick Google search will tell you everything), but the parents should have known.  These stories have been circulating about Kelly since the ’90s, so why would the parents think their beautiful young daughters couldn’t be seduced by fame?  The mom says she thought supervising her girls during visits with Kelly would be enough, but all we have to do is think about half the crap we pulled on our parents while they were watching over us.

One of TRN’s supporters who goes by the handle ‘NBA  Is Fixed’ puts it this way….”I have a question, who are the dumb ass parents that allowed their daughters to meet R Kelly?…R Kelly said he needed Heaven to “Give him a hug” but he continues to indulge in the devil’s debauchery. No more chances, no more excuses, the black community must sever ties with R Kelly immediately!   It’s a valid question and one that parents have to ask themselves.  Fame and fortune doesn’t mean that people aren’t still depraved, sociopaths…it just means they have money and celebrity that they will use to victimize unsuspecting fans.

No parent wants to believe their child will make bad decisions…but they do.  Jocelyn’s quote immediately starts out with “I’m 21 and will soon be 22“…translated to mean ‘I’m grown and can do what I want’.  True, the law says once you turn 18,  you’re an adult and can make your own decisions….that doesn’t mean you’ll make the right decisions.  Legal doesn’t make you grown or mature.

The parents did reach out to police and the media in their frustration.  But their desperation may come too late.  As for Jocelyn’s claim that she’s not ‘brainwashed’, may be not.  But she certainly is ‘blind’ to the truth that Kelly has a long history of sexual predatory charges and accusations.  Just because someone is famous, doesn’t mean that they’re perfect.  That’s a lesson fans of all ages need to comprehend.  Whether it’s Bill Cosby or R. Kelly, thinking that your way to fame and fortune is by letting a celebrity use you is definitely an example of being brainwashed.
