With all this talk of biopics and family issues, it is refreshing that the future is looking bright for legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin’s Lifetime biopic.

Franklin’s biopic has been underway for years, and she has been heavily involved in its production. Her main concern is being represented in the best way possible.

On Saturday, Ms. Franklin met with Lifetime to discuss potential actresses who would play the leading role although it seems as if her heart is set on award-winning actress/singer Audra Ann McDonald.

Amongst the group of people that Franklin met with besides Lifetime were Clive Davis, Suzanne De Passe, and Taylor Hackard. Each person added input that would be essential in helping choose who would be the best candidate to play Franklin’s character.

Franklin is still open to more options on who will play her character, but her top two are Audra McDonald and Jennifer Hudson.

McDonald has appeared in on-stage musicals and dramas such as Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, and Porgy and Bess. She has also appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2000) and an ABC television drama entitled Private Practice.

On top of acting McDonald has also recorded five solo albums. Franklin’s only concern with McDonald is if she will be able to embody the soul that Franklin is known for because of her background in classical music.

Hudson, on the other hand is full of soul, having starred in Dreamgirls alongside Beyoncé and Jamie Foxx and having her single ‘Spotlight” peaking at number 24 on the Billboard Top 100 charts.

Franklin says that any other potentials would be suggestions from producers, people that she may not have heard before.

At the end of the day, Franklin knows who will be the best candidate for her role. Whoever she chooses has no choice but to step up to the plate.
