If you watch TV news with any regularity, Candace Owens smug arrogance has surely crept onto your screen. The Trump-loving conservative is building her brand on outlandish lies she spews as truth much like her mentor.
Owens landed in the spotlight in which she loves to bask by going head to head with activist Dr. Cornel West on FOX News recently. Well, it was exactly head-to-head…West was speaking from his head, Owens was talking out of an orifice a lot lower on the body.
Owens declared that African Americans had a much better life the first century after the abolition of slavery. In the discourse about political candidates(primarily Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren) socialism and the detriment programs like welfare have inflicted on society, Owens said, “You know in our community after the first 100 years…after slavery, the black community was doing better. We were going up, up, up and suddenly they socialized our community via welfare policies and the black community started going down, down, down.”
West is an educator and schooled Owens on history and politics. West says “Welfare was not socialist. It was an attempt to intervene given the failure of capitalism to provide jobs of a living wage to people. That’s not socialism.”
West later reminded Owens, “The very fact that you to aspire and achieve the level that you have based on the struggle of those who came before from W. E. B Dubois, from Ida B. Wells, to Frederick Douglas they were not concerned with ‘isms’ they were concerned with justice and fairness…you’ve got to get your history right my dear sister.”
Let’s fast forward through history and the 100 years after slavery. You had reconstruction which was in some ways more brutal than slavery. Blacks were free but had no jobs, no homes, no education, no schools to attend to be educated, owned no property, no political voice or rights. Black codes were enacted to restrict the newly earned freedom of Blacks to keep them on hand as labor. Laws eventually gave Blacks separate but equal rights. You could vote, own homes go to school-but do it over there.
And exactly 100 years after the end of slavery lands us smack in the middle of the Civil Rights struggle where Blacks were dying for the change to be treated equally. So, Owens statement is just wrong and a lie.
Mouthpieces like Owens aren’t concerned about history, facts or truth. Their only concern is their agenda and pushing a narrative to convince people to join their side. If they can’t convince you, then they’ll settle on confusing you. They latch on to talking points sent out to Owens and all the other minions to keep repeating and repeating until people start to wonder if it’s valid.
This isn’t a hit piece on Owens but it is a condemnation of a despicable practice that is becoming the norm in our society–lie, lie lie and kept lying until it sounds like truth. Say anything no matter how absurd and blatantly false with enough conviction that others will doubt their own beliefs, their own sanity even.
It’s a manipulation tool and manipulators prey on those who are the weakest–in this case, the mentally weak. People who won’t check or can’t check the facts and assume that they are being told the truth.
In the words of Spike Lee’s “School Daze”-“WAKE UP!” Don’t let people put a friendly Blackface on a bad idea to sell it to you. Every story has a villain…every story of betrayal has a wolf who dressed up like a lamb to blend in.
Owens is traveling the same career course as Omarosa. Look at how far selling out got her.
