Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and journalist Carl Sandburg once said, “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell.”
The GOP is definitely taking Sandburg’s quote to heart.
On Wednesday, Republican lawbreakers…I mean lawmakers decided civil unrest was the way to disrupt impeachment depositions.
Rep. Matt Gaetz posted “I led over 30 of colleagues into the SCIF where Adam Schiff is holding secret impeachment depositions“. Of course, before storming the depositions Gaetz and the guys posed for TV coverage to announce their protests.
Gaetz the proclaimed organizer of this sh*t show easily deserves the MVP award–Most Valueless Person. They are protesting the proper protocol as mandated by our Constitution and laws to conduct an impeachment inquiry of the president.
They were rewarded with posts calling them patriots. Patriots? For violating and obstructing the laws they each swore an oath to uphold?
As always, let’s compare fake news to facts. The basement locale of the impeachment depositions isn’t some secret dwelling where the Democrats are beating testimonies out of people. It is a SCIF located in the basement so that it’s secure out of the way of cell phones with GPS that gives away the location. Like the cell phones, the GOP protesters took into the room to video their sideshow.
They claim they want transparency when the impeachment inquiry is abiding by the law and collecting testimony to determine the facts. This phase of the inquiry is like a Grand Jury. They meet in a secure room, hear the evidence, some testimony to determine if there should be an indictment.
The GOP alleges the facts are being withheld from them and they are not given due process. The inquiry has not prohibited lawmakers from either side from attending. So what are they whining about?
They are whining because the system is doing what it was designed to do. Their real objection is ‘we’re White and these rules shouldn’t apply to us.’
When NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick exercised his right to a peaceful, silent protest by kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem, he and those who joined him were called “sons of bi**hes” by Trump and vilified as “thugs’ and ingrates. The gang of GOP protesters was given pizza and allowed to break the law in peace.
When you’re elected to congress, your job is literally to make laws to govern the people…not break laws to try and save your boy in the White House.
As Sandberg said, they’re pounding the table, yelling and raising hell because the facts and law are not on their side. The testimony given so far has been damaging for Trump and his co-conspirators. Trump supporters know impeachment is coming, but rather than live with the truth, they’d rather break laws, threaten civil war and burn the country down.
An MLB umpire threatened on Twitter to usher in a civil war over impeachment. History is nothing if not ironic. The first Civil War was also over Whites who didn’t want to obey the law of the land that said slavery was wrong and had to end.
