Thank God it’s Friday! Wait…maybe not. Friday or the weekend is usually when Donald Trump authors his most damaging tweets or dismisses staff and cabinet members. It’s been one full week since Trump decided to attack the NFL and the NBA with racist comments. Just like with other disasters caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Maria, Americans are still dealing with the devastation from Trump’s twitterstorm.
The latest fallout…was as far away from pro football as you can get…the U.S Air Force Academy’s Preparatory School in Colorado Springs where racial slurs were hurled at five African-American cadets. As Security Forces are looking into who was behind the epithets, we can assume from this parent’s “The word has zero power in my house…the word is not going to yield a reaction…” response that part of the message involved use of the “N-word”. The Academy’s superintendent, Lt. Gen Jay Silveria took a hard stance and made it clear that such racism will not be accepted saying “If you can’t treat someone from another gender, whether that’s a man or a woman, with dignity and respect, then you need to get out. If you demean someone in any way, then you need to get out. And if you can’t treat someone from another race or a different color skin with dignity and respect, then you need to get out.”
Silveria directly linked the incident to racial commentary that’s currently spreading across the nation saying, “We would also be tone deaf not to think about the backdrop of what’s going on in our country, things like Charlottesville and Ferguson, the protests in the NFL.”
In the wake of Trump’s divisive antics, we’ve seen a major satellite company losing money to refund customers offended by the televised games and protests (never occurred to them to just tune in after the anthem is played) and the entire state of Louisiana trample the free speech of thousands of students by threatening to dismiss athletes from teams if they participate in the protest during the playing of the anthem at games.
And more ripples still, this time from the Moms of some of those NFL players. Trump referred to the players as “sons of bitches” who should be fired if they don’t stand for the national anthem.
HuffPost reports that “The Professional Football Players Mothers Association penned an open letter to the president in response to his repeated attacks on the players who’ve protested police brutality and racial injustice by taking a knee during the national anthem.” The article says ” the mothers’ association wrote in the missive…“It saddens the organization to know that President Donald Trump would make our sons — as well as their mothers — the target of inflammatory, offensive comments that are intended to promote anger and hatred, depleting them of their heritage and self-identity.” The moms added that they were proud of their sons and ended with this bible verse from Proverbs –“Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.”
The NFL moms taking a stand is the equivalent of Mom stepping in to give a toddler throwing a tantrum a time out. Trump needs a time out. An entire country thrown into disarray and drowning in racial hatred because one man is playing with Americans’ emotions and beliefs like an overgrown child in playing with a room full of toy soldiers.
Someone commented in a news report that Trump seemed pleased with all the mayhem and confusion he started last weekend. Who does that…who revels in confusion? Let’s go back to the bible the NFL Mom’s quoted at the end of their letter. The bible tells us in Corinthians that God is not the author of confusion. The inference then is that satan is the author of confusion. Fortunately for me, I don’t worship satan.
