Usually, a Donald Trump provocation dies down after 48 hours or so…but not this time. The continuing fall out is dragging AT&T’s Direct TV down with it. The Satellite TV service is offering refunds to customers offended by NFL players bending a knee in protest.
According to the NY Post, “Normally the company does not give refunds for the specialty package after the season starts, but it apparently changed course after getting calls from hoards of customers upset over the players and coaches who knelt for the anthem during Sunday and Monday games, one former subscriber said.”
Apparently, Direct TV caved to customers who got their feelings hurt by all the teams, coaches, anthem singers and owners who decided to participate in the protest after Trump’s tweets calling protesters “sons of b*&ches” who should be fired.
Once news of Direct TV’s rumored stance on the issue spread to Twitter, the satellite company was drowning in negative posts from more angry customers on both sides of the issue.
You have to wonder if this is what Trump wanted–to stir up his fanbase comprised mainly of White supremacists, neo-Nazi’s, alt-right and conservatives to widen racial gaps in this country. While people are busy knee-jerking to Trump’s latest trolling, you have to wonder what’s the big picture here. Is Trump revving his troops in case he is impeached so they’ll riot and cause racial chaos?
Even with all the anger, there are calmer heads to prevail. One of those calmer heads is on the shoulders of journalist and sports anchor Bryant Gumbel. In his Tuesday night broadcast, the veteran newsman referred to Trump’s latest antics as “racist, churlish and childish“. But in spite of his harsh criticism, Gumbel went on to thank Trump for an unintentional benefit of his racism. Gumbel said,” Those of us who have long focused on the intersection on sports and society have often wondered what it would take for today’s athletes to forsake the path of least resistance and actually stand for something, And now we know.”
Here’s Gumbel’s entire comment…
The “Real Sports” host added “apathy won’t cut it anymore.” Gumbel’s right, Trump has managed to reach the modern American athlete who often is buffeted from day-to-day social concerns by their money and celebrity. Trump has awaken those sleeping giants who often ignored the police brutality against minorities, the inequality and injustice facing those who can’t buy their way out of it. It is time for athletes and celebrities to realize the value of their social platforms and just like they do in sports, pick a side.
Gumbel’s show airs on HBO, but we can assume most of Trump’s supporters missed it because they were too busy canceling their Direct TV subscriptions. One person who canceled said he would show those overpaid athletes by taking money out of their pockets for taking the knee. Perhaps somebody should tell Trump supporters, Direct TV keeps the money for its subscriptions—they don’t pay the pro teams.
