The “Fate of the Furious” Is to Break a Billion at Box Office Since opening in theaters three weeks ago, the latest “Fast an Furious” installment has been racing past just about anything that dared cross its path.  The “Fate of the Furious” cruised past a particular mile marker this weekend into billion dollar box office territory.   Universal Pictures says “Fate” has earned $192.7 million here at home and an unbelievable $868 million overseas.  Only 30 films in movie history have reached such box office sales and the “Fast and Furious” franchise now joins the ranks of  blockbusters like “The Avengers” and “Star Wars” in the billion dollar club.  Another first earned by “Fate”, it’s the highest-grossing movie ever directed by an African-American director—F. Gary Gray.  The movie stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris.  Even before it hit this benchmark, the “Fast and Furious” franchise was already on course to make at least another two films.

“Baby Boy” Star Grown and Ready for a Sequel   Hare to believe it’s been 16 years since “Baby Boy” hit theaters.   The coming of age film stars Tyrese Gibson as learns how to survive growing up in the mean streets of South Central L.A.  The audience got drawn into the hard hitting heartbreak of watching Jody (Gibson), his best friend Sweetpea (Omar Gooding) and his girlfriend Yvette (Taraji P. Henson) deal with consequences of life like pregnancy, drive-bys, rape and murder.   The movie was a hit with both critics and young millenniums.  Now almost twenty years after the original, actor Gibson is hinting that its time for a sequel.  Gibson  teased his IG followers by posting a clip of the 2001 movie and tagging director John Singleton.

Some fans responded with eager hopes of a sequel while some felt like the original would be hard to beat and perhaps the actor should ‘leave a good thing alone.’   As for director Singleton, he mentioned way back in 2015 that he was interested in perhaps making a sequel to the film.   So fans, keep your fingers crossed.

Janet’s Big Countdown   Janet Jackson was catapulted back into the public eye last month after news broke that she and billionaire hubby Wassam Al Mana were separated.  Miss Jackson has always known how to work a crowd and the media, and she’s doing just that with a mysterious countdown on her official website.  The clock is ticking towards 9 p.m. Monday May 1st but the “Miss You Much” singer isn’t giving any clues as to what’s at the end of the countdown.  It’s enough to get the media and fans buzzing.  Some speculate that Janet may announce tour dates, others wonder if she’s been working on news music.  The only one who knows isn’t telling us much…but we only have to wait another 10…8…6 hours and five minutes from this writing to find out!

For this week’s look at Black Hollywood, that’s a Wrap!
