The holidays tend to make most parents grateful and proud of their children as evidenced by the enthusiasm of posting pictures of the fam.
Actress Gabrielle Union and hubby Dwayne Wade posted this family photo in celebration of Thanksgiving…
Instead of breaking the ‘awww’s’ and ‘oooooh’s’ meter for the level of cuteness oozing from their daughter and son, the couple got a lot of criticism and hatred.
The reason? Take a closer look at what their 12-year-old son Zion is wearing…a crop shirt and long white nails. A few critics didn’t like seeing the male child sporting what they judged to be a feminine look and expressed disapproval of Wade and Union’s parenting by allowing a child to determine his own gender preference.
Retired NBA all-star Dwayne Wade wasn’t hear for any of that negative energy and brought the heat in defense of his son. Wade posted on Twitter, “I’ve seen some post-thanksgiving hate on social about my family photo. Stupidity is apart of this world we live in—so i get it. But here’s the thing—I’ve been chosen to lead my family not y’all. So we will continue to be us and support each other with pride, love & a smile!”
This isn’t the first time Wade and Union have come to the defense of the son. Remember all the anger the couple received when they escorted Zion to the Miami Pride Parade earlier this year?
And the Wades aren’t the first celebrity parents to be trounced and troll for their liberal parenting. Will Smith and Jada, Angelina Jolie, Magic Johnson have all been criticized for allowing their chided for allowing their children to dress the way they want.
Is this a case of liberal celebrities trying to push an agenda on the world as conspiracy theorists fear and allege? Apparently not. Wade had his family’s back and a lot of fans had his back…
Idk if @DwyaneWade & @itsgabrielleu know how POWERFUL & MOVING it is that they’re embracing their son’s individuality. (Damnit I’m crying) In our community, being given autonomy over your body, beliefs, image, & statements as a child isn’t a thing. That child is free & happy 🙌🏾

Thank you for leading with love and being proud to show it. Just your example can have ripple effects and benefit more families in our community by helping parents build build better, less damaging, and more loving relationships with their children.

So proud of Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union. ❤️ “As a parent my only goal is that my kids feel that I see them, love them and support them,” Dwyane Wade said.
And to the people being negative and homophobic, stop obsessing about “gender norms” https://t.co/sifl8F1Y9S

One response pointed out that in the Black community, homophobia runs rampant. There’s no proof of that but people keep saying it. The Black community, especially the younger generations, are a lot more tolerant and accepting of all people and preferences. They’re more willing to let people live their lives as they choose.
You don’t have to raise your children the way Wade and Union have decided to raise theirs…then again maybe we all should. Wade’s offense to many is that he’s decided to love his children. Tell me, what child no matter their race or class wouldn’t pray to have a dad who is present, accountable and loving enough to listen to his children.
