by TRN Staff Writers

Donald Glover Just Can’t Wait to Be King  Donald Glover’s resume is getting better and longer.  The “Atlanta” star just inked the deal to make him “Simba” in Disney’s upcoming live-action reboot of “The Lion King”.  Disney first announced the idea back in September spurred on by the box-office success of “The Jungle Book”.  Disney says it will utilize performance-capture technology along with computer-generated imagery for the retelling of this classic.  Most actors might be nervous to take on Simba, but not Glover whose already signed on with some major projects. You can catch him this summer in Marvel’s upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and he’s also nabbed the out of this world role in the much talked about upcoming Hans Solo movie in the continuing “Star Wars” saga.  Glover will be playing the role of Lando Calrissian made famous by veteran actor Billy Dee Williams in the original trilogy. Glover will be joined by another Hollywood veteran in “The Lion King” reboot–James Earl Jones is set to reprise his role as Simba’s father King Mufasa.  Jones’ baritone commands ruled over Pride Rock in the original 1994 animated movie.

Sterling K. Brown, Trevante Rhodes and Keegan-Michael Key take on “The Predator”   It’s been 30 years since the alien Predator landed in theaters on planet Earth and scared movie audiences everywhere. The original 1987 movie starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite team of special forces soldiers on a mission to rescue hostages in Central America.  Once there, the mission becomes a fight for survival as the team realizes they are being hunted by an extraterrestrial who is looking for human trophies as his prey. The studio and director aren’t forthcoming with many plot details about the new predator movie, but they say it will be set in present day. Shane Black is directing the reboot and knows his way around this story since he had a supporting role in the original which was such a colossal box-office hit, it spawned two sequels and a couple of cross-over films with another sci-fi mega franchise “Alien”.  No word on any of the characters Brown, Key and Rhodes will be playing. The film is set to be in theaters this time next year.

Bryan Tyree Henry Trades in ‘Paper Boi’ for “White Boy Rick”  Just coming off of the successful premiere of the award winning FX series “Atlanta”, Henry has jumped on board the gritty film “White Boy Rick”.  The movie revolves around Richard Wershe Jr. who as a 14-year old became an undercover informant for federal and local law enforcement agencies.  Wershe grew up to become law enforcement’s enemy when he established himself as a drug lord pitted against the agencies that empowered him. The “Atlanta” and “Boardwalk Empire” star is set to play narcotics detective Mel “Roach” Jackson who may also be caught up in a double life. Henry joins a star studded cast including Matthew McConaughey, Bruce Dern and Jennifer Jason Leigh.  “White Boy Rick” is scheduled for an early 2018 release.

For this week’s look at Black Hollywood, that’s a wrap!
