The embattled Donald Trump has spent the last 7 months building to an eventual combustion of some sort. Trump’s constant un-presidential behavior of Twitter tirades, lies, firings and random rants like telling police to abuse criminals have just become too common and way more drama than most Americans signed on for in the last election.
Just when all the crazy on Capitol Hill seemed to be hurtling towards DEFCON 1(global severity), in steps Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller to impanel a grand jury as the next step in the Russian election interference probe. The grand jury investigation may not end the way people expect, but it does show that Mueller and the other lawyers working on the case suspect there is something there.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters on MSNBC Friday called Trump “the most deplorable person” she’s ever met. Now with word of a grand jury into his dealings, Waters says the dots are being connected and she hopes it leads to impeachment. Waters says we are nearing a constitution crisis and should have moved faster because for the last seven months it’s been apparent, ” that there was something terribly wrong with him…”
Waters also tweeted a reminder to Black voters that Trump’s pitch to them was “What the hell do you have to lose?”
Nearly 200 days into his presidential term, the answer is crystal clear. Just this week, it was revealed that Trump plans to fight racism against Whites by intimidating colleges and universities that adhere to Affirmative Action policies.
Add that to another threatening move for minorities from Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions who last month reversed a policy former President Obama put into place to protect people from police abuse. Sessions greenlit a federal policy that allows local and state police to take cash and property from people even if they are not charged with a crime. A spokesperson says “The goal here is to empower police and prosecutors with this important tool that can be used to combat crime...” and assures there are safe guards.
Obama stopped this activity in 2008 because it was nothing more than a policing for profit sham. And it hits hardest in minorities communities. According to an ACLU report, “Civil asset forfeiture was originally created to take away booty from drug ‘kingpins’, but the practice has been perverted into an ongoing attack on Californians who can’t afford to fight the government in court, a burden that falls disproportionately on low-income people and people of color.”
Asset seizure started in the 80’s during the height of the drug wars, but how is re-instating a flawed, prejudiced policy going to make America great again? Trump seems to be trying to show his core White voters who put him in office that he’s coming through on his promises. Interesting those moves against minorities were all rushed through just before the grand jury was impaneled. The chaos– White House firings, the inappropriate speeches to police and the boy-scouts, Scaramucci– all that drama is nothing more than deflection to throw people off the scent of the Russian scandal. His supporters may think its progress, but as the polls show, more and more voters are wising up to what’s really going on. With a new all time low approval rating of 33%, the Trump train is derailing. Nothing short of a war with N. Korea (let’s hope no one is that desperate to save his own behind) will get people off the truth trail.
