The Best Man supporting actor and “Hustle and Flow” academy award winner Terrence Howard has definitely made his mark in the film industry. At this point, it is expected for an actor with his caliber of talent to shine in whatever film he’s in. Here are 8 interesting facts about Terrence Howard.
1.) Both of his parents are biracial
Growing up, Terrence and his family experienced a lot of discrimination due to the color of their skin. It didn’t help him that both of his parents were just as biracial as he was.
2.) He emancipated himself at the age of 16
Because he left his home at such an early age, his parents’ household was suspected of being an abusive environment. It sent the wheels turning, however. Two years later, he would leave to New York to pursue his acting career.
3.) His acting debut was a role on The Cosby Show
While he was studying to be a science teacher at the Pratt Institute in New York, he auditioned and landed a role on the Cosby Show. What’s crazy is that Terrence convinced the school to let him in, even though he had a low GPA. Talk about a leap of faith!
4.) He secretly married a woman only a month after meeting her
Reports say that she was a Canadian woman named Miranda. After only a month of dating, he secretly married her. It may sound crazy, but Terrence doesn’t have the most perfect record when it comes to marriage. His first marriage was with Lori McCommas. They were married for 14 years and gave birth two beautiful children. After that, he married Michelle Ghent back in 2010, but they were soon divorce after highly publicized domestic violence issues.
5.) He left Iron man because they were going to give him 1/8th of his original salary!
Not that we’re taking a loss with Don Cheadle, but for those who are wondering, they were trying to rip Mr. Howard off. Because the Iron Man franchise was doing so well, they decided to cut his salary dramatically. Terrence stated in an interview that they were going to cut his pay down to 1/8 of the original salary because the sequels “were doing good with or without him,” according to Black Blue Dog.
6.) His father was imprisoned for stabbing a man to death
This kind of violence could have been the reason why Terrence emancipated himself at 16. His father then served only an 11 month sentence in prison on manslaughter charges back in 1971.
7.) At one point, Terrence was pursuing a music career
Ever wonder why he sounded like such a natural rapping in “Hustle and Flow?’ well that’s because he was an artist at one point. His debut album was called: “Shine Through It” and he was signed with Columbia records.
8.) He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity
That’s right – Terrence was a frat boy in college aka an honorary member. He was also awarded a Doctorate Of Humane Letters from SCSU even though he never attended the university, according to BlackBlueDog.com.
