Jenifer Lewis : “I Went to Therapy for Seventeen Years..Because I wanted to Live a Good Life”

“How and why did I become an actress? Well, I sang my first solo in church and I saw the reaction of the congregation; and I stood there with my thumb in my mouth and I said, ‘This is life.’”

Jenifer Lewis breaks it down for us her journey to stardom while combating the struggles of her life along the way.  She keeps it real for us too.  She gives us a brief look into her life growing up, mentioning that she used to have a fixation of staying up late and watching movies of her favorite actresses.  Little did she know, she was unlocking her passion for acting.

“I’ve always been nocturnal.  I would watch movies late at night, Tallulah Bankhead, Betty Davis, Joan Crawford, Hattie Mcdaniel, Dorothy Dandridge – All of them.  And I just knew what I wanted to be.  I knew my passion very early.  Been very blessed and lucky and fortunate in that sense.”

After realizing her passion at a very early age, Lewis made a conscious decision to change her life for the better.

“Look, I took care of myself.  I’m bipolar, and I made a choice to go and get myself level so that I can enjoy my success.  I went to therapy for seventeen years, (two-times a week), because I wanted to live a good life.  It’s been a good journey. I’m very proud of myself.  It took me a very long time to be able to say that to myself – ‘I’m proud of myself’.”

Her dedication to her craft was what pushed her to become the star she is today.  What we love about Jenifer Lewis is that she is successful not just because of her talent, but because she took control of her life, and encourages others to do the same.

“The thing is, is you want to get up and do what you love to do.  And I love entertaining.  The other thing I love is giving back.”
