John Legend has always made it clear he is not a fan of the current president, but this week he’s serving up a brutally frank, profanity ladened indictment of Trump.
TMZ caught up with the “Ordinary People” singer as he was leaving a West Hollywood club Tuesday night where according to the site Legend “lashes out in a profanity-laced tirade against Trump, and it appears his recent comments about Baltimore and its representative in Congress, Elijah Cummings,.. set him off.”
Legend called Trump a “racist piece of sh##” and compared him to a festering sore on the consciousness of the country. Here’s the full clip of what Legend had to say…
Last weekend Trump went on a Twitter tirade against
Cummings who Chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. The chairman ripped into Trump’s border patrol policies in a recent hearing when the head of Homeland Security tried to gloss over reports of children in cages being subjected to inhumane treatment. Cummings in an emotional charge said, “I’m talking about human beings. I’m not talking about people that come from, as the president said, shitholes. These are human beings. Human beings. Just trying to live a better life.”
Trump angered by Cummings’ criticism tweeted last weekend…
Legend’s outburst turned into a rallying cry for many on Twitter…

But not everyone was cheering for Legend. Many condemned for using such vile language because kids may see it. Yes, we’re aware of the double standard and hypocrisy that kept them silent when Trump used similar language to put down other countries of people of color, and when he referred to Black athletes as ‘sons of bitches’.
Others complained that Legend disrespected the country by disrespecting the President. Still, others said Trump spoke the truth and they called Legend a racist.
So now, Trump gets more supporters coming out the woodwork because a high profile celebrity meaning to stand against Trump by speaking out has caused a second wave of Trumpers singing his praises. It prolongs a story that dominated the news cycle last weekend and may do so again for a second weekend. Not to mention all the Russian bots that have jumped into the fray to instigate further and stir up more racial tension.
But should celebs like Legend bite their tongues for fear of riling up Trump’s base? Of course not. Despite being a celeb, Legend is still an American citizen affected by what flows out of the White House just like everyone else. And most people are worn out with the daily drama, insults, sell-outs, lies, and sheer craziness that seem to consume this particular administration.
Perhaps the best way celebs can make their voices heard isn’t by being the lead story on TMZ(an outlet run by a man who is reportedly a Trump supporter), but by getting out to make sure people get out to vote. Maybe instead of being just another clanging cymbal, celebs can motivate people in ways that will have a lasting impact.
To millions of fans, John Legend is still lauded for amazing vocals. But if he and other stars use their clout to do more than just complain, they can motivate and mobilize change. That is what separates superstars from true legends.
