The President called the Jussie Smollett case a “national embarrassment” after prosecutors in Chicago dropped all criminal charges against the actor for allegedly staging a racist, a homophobic attack against himself. We all know what a drama queen the president can be but in this case, there is a lot of drama and confusion.
Was he attacked or wasn’t he? Did he fabricate the whole attack because he’s a gay Black man or not? Was this all a sham for money?
If the Jussie Smollett drama has you confused then know you’re not alone. The last few weeks of the actor’s life has had more drama than Cookie could even dream up on an episode of “Empire”.
Smollett claims two men screamed racist and homophobic epithets at him in January as they beat him. Some thought the story sounded suspect from the start and police later charged Smollett with masterminding the hoax to try and get more money for his role on his hit show “Empire”. And on Tuesday, this unbelievable drama took yet another unbelievable twist when prosecutors just dropped the criminal case.
WHAT?!!! Most people don’t know what to believe now and that includes Smollett’s castmates over at the “Empire” set. According to TMZ “a number of people… are shocked by the lack consequences … and don’t want him back on the show. They are especially offended Jussie allegedly faked the attack to squeeze more money out of producers.” According to the article, others think that Smollett is no threat to the show’s future now that he’s been cleared.
But he has been cleared not according to Trump who tweeted…
That coming from a man who just dodged impeachment on Russian collusion charges so of course, he would be the first to throw a stone.
Is Smollett’s behavior an embarrassment? ABSOLUTELY-if he did indeed orchestrate the hoax which we still don’t know because the case was thrown out.
Is this worthy of the DOJ and FBI investigating? I have to say no. I understand if he did stage the hoax it’s a hate crime, but what about the hate crimes that aren’t staged? No DOJ investigation after Charlottesville…or after unarmed 17-year-old Antwon Rose was killed by a police officer. As for the FBI, shouldn’t they be off figuring out how to stop Russia from hacking the 2020 presidential race?
An undercurrent of possibility is that Smollett is another celebrity getting away with a crime because he has fame and money which equates to power in this country. If you have enough money, you can buy, lie, cheat, and steal your not so smart kid’s way into an Ivy League university. If you have enough money and fame, commit fraud against millions with fake universities and mafioso business dealings, admit to sexually harassing women on tape, sleep with porn stars and still get elected President. The divide between those with money/power and those without is the wider chasm and catalyst that fuels the racism behind education, economics, and the justice system.
Is Smollett getting away with a crime because he’s innocent? Or is his money and fame paving the way for him?
