Missy Elliott Throwing It Back & Showing Them How It’s Done

by Ms. Black Hollywood

The Friday grind just got a lot easier thanks to Missy Elliott sneaking in under the cover of midnight and dropping a new five-track EP.

“Iconology” is the first album from the rap diva in almost 14 years. Missy doesn’t miss a step because she also dropped a video for the lead single “Throw It Back”.  Just the title implies, “Throw It Back” takes us back to the old school days of rap in sound and sights thanks to the video. Take a look…

Elliott still bringing her trademark originally creative videos while letting listeners know she is the original when it comes to rap styles. Elliott’s earned her stripes and bragging rights.  She started in the music game in the mid-90s as part of all-girl R&B group before getting with childhood friend and lifelong collaborator Timbaland to create for stars like Aaliyah and SWV.

After a few years, Missy went out on her own.  Her debut album “Supa Dupa Fly” gave the rapper her first hit with “Sock It 2 Me”. The single made it to the Top 20 pushing Missy’s album to number three on Billboard and making her the first female rapper to ever chart that high.

Once she started, Missy couldn’t be stopped.  The remix of her “Hot Boyz” dominated the number one spot for 18 weeks.  Future songs like “Work It” would earn Missy the first of five Grammy Awards for Best Female Rap Solo.

Missy is “the best-selling female rapper in Nielsen Music history according to Billboard in 2017. (

Elliott’s music was about more than a hot beat and fire lyrics.  Elliott changed and electrified the video genre by experimenting with everything from garbage bag fashion to dancing puppets. In the end she redefined the creative flow of the visual medium.

Her songs took on issues like gender equality and body positivity.  This year, Elliott became the first female rapper inducted into the songwriters’ hall of fame and is this year’s recipient of MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award joining the roster of names like LL Cool J,David Bowie, Michael and Janet Jackson and Beyonce.

Missy doesn’t take any of the fame for granted and keeps it real by staying humble…

Like the song says, “Don’t Look for another Missy cause they’ll be no nother one“.

Missy has a nice song with lots of base. Can rappers please stop promoting expensive European products please? How come rappers don’t promote black owned products and businesses?
