Actress Monique may have won an Oscar in 2009 for her role in Precious, but since then, there has been a huge decrease in the number of films she has starred in. In fact, there haven’t really been any.
According to Monique, in an essay she had written, director Lee Daniels shed some light on why the actress hasn’t had much luck in Hollywood over the past few years.
She wrote,” And he said to me, ‘Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.’ I said, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘Because you didn’t play the game.”
What is blackballing? In Hollywood blackballing occurs when other actors and directors decide not to work with you. It could be for many reasons, but it is commonly due to the person being difficult to work with. Did it happen because Mo’ Nique didn’t play their game or was it something else?
When Mo’Nique accepted her Oscar in 09, she made a remark about the Academy making a decision based on a performance and not on politics.
Although Daniels didn’t respond when Mo’Nique inquired about what game she was supposed to be playing, one could speculate that she may have simply said the wrong thing that pissed off the wrong people.
It has been brought to the attention of many that she is difficult to work with and because of her attitude and demands while on the set of Precious that people just don’t want to work with her anymore.
Mo’Nique also wrote about several roles she had been offered, but unfortunately didn’t play. They included the role of Forest Whitaker’s wife in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, a character played instead by Oprah Winfrey; a role in Fox hit Empire; and the role of Richard Pryor’s grandmother in the upcoming biopic Daniels is working on.
Hopefully, Mo’Nique can make a comeback in Hollywood because it should go without saying that she is quite the entertainer.
Do you think it’s fair that Mo’Nique is being blackballed? Share your thoughts.
