It’s been 7 years and most of us still remember Trayvon Martin. The 17-year-old Florida teen was visiting his father and decided to walk to a corner store wearing a hooded sweatshirt. He was on his way back to the townhouse carrying a bag of Skittles and a juice when he crossed paths with an over-zealous neighborhood watch volunteer named George Zimmerman. Zimmerman didn’t see a kid with candy, he saw a “suspicious” character.
Zimmerman claimed he shot the teen in a desperate act of self-defense after Trayvon attacked him. Local police said they could find no evidence to refute Zimmerman’s claim. The teen’s death sparked countless rallies around the country…more than two million people signed an online petition demanding a full investigation into Trayvon’s death. More than a year later, Zimmerman went on trial in the shooting death of Trayvon. A jury eventually acquitted him of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.
Zimmerman is heading back to court but this time he is not the defendant. Late Wednesday, the Miami Herald reported Zimmerman is “suing Trayvon’s family, the prosecutors and others…. for $100 million in civil damages, alleging defamation, abuse of civil process and conspiracy“. The suit reportedly names Trayvon’s mother Sybrina Fulton as the lead defendant. Fulton became a national figure and advocate against gun violence following the events of her son’s death. She even campaigned for Hillary Clinton and is now running for a District 1 seat on the Miami-Dade County Commission.
News of the lawsuit caused an uproar on Twitter…
Wow… I’m stunned. This guy murdered a child, got away with it, and now wants to profit from the murder, while inflicting more pain on to #TrayvonMartin’s family.

How do you look yourself in the mirror and say I’m going to profit off of the grief and pain I have caused. #Rhetoricalquestion

Since his trial, Zimmerman has routinely drifted in and out of the public eye. In 2013, Zimmerman’s girlfriend called police saying he had pointed a shotgun at her. When police arrived, they found Zimmerman had barricaded himself inside the apartment. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a weapon.
Two years later, Zimmerman was arrested again on aggravated assault with a weapon after throwing a wine bottle at his ex-girlfriend. In 2016, Zimmerman called police after he claimed a man at a restaurant in Sanford punched him in the face because he was reportedly bragging about killing Trayvon. Later that same year, Zimmerman was tossed out of a bar for yelling at a waitress. A Seminole County Sheriff deputy claimed he heard Zimmerman say, “I didn’t know you were a ni**er lover“.
The list goes on to include road rage incidents, being shot at in an attempted murder case, stalking a private investigator working on the JayZ docuseries “Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story”, being banned from dating apps Bumble and Tinder, peddling stolen, copyrighted stock photos on eBay as his own originals
What kind of monster kills a child and then has the nerve to sue the parents of the victim because they pursued justice at your trial. Zimmerman claims the trial has lead to his suffering from things like anxiety and weight gain. Maybe it wasn’t the trial…that’s what most moral, decent human beings who murdered an innocent, unarmed child call suffering from a guilty conscious.
The lawsuit is Zimmerman’s latest cash grab attempt… or maybe he thinks he really has gotten away with murder because it’s been seven years. Well, you know what they say about karma…that bish may take her time but she always shows up.
