Music Monday: Blaque – Where Are They Now?

Do you remember that 90’s girl group that had that really catchy song, 808? You know the group, they had a TLC feel but there was something different about them that just resonated with the younger crowd. Surely you remember Blaque! No? Here’s a little refresher.
Yeah, those ladies. Well, It’s no wonder why they had a TLC feel, because their mentor was actually the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.
Natina Reed, Shamari Fears and Brandi Williams first formed in the last 90s under the name Blaque Ivory. The ladies initially started off singing jingles to pay the bills, but when the group met with Left Eye’s brother, Ronald Lopes who would later make history when they were introduced to Left Eye herself.
Their self-titled debut album, Blaque, dropped in the summer of 1999 and it went on to sell 1.5 million copies. It shows that the public was very much into the TLC vibe, no matter if it was from the actual group or a new bunch of mini-me’s.
Perhaps their most notable song was Bring It All To Me, which you cannot deny that once it got stuck in your head, it wouldn’t get out.
After so much success with their debut album, it was surprising that their sophomore album, Blaque Out, which was supposed to be released in 2001 was shelved at the last minute by Columbia Records. This was around the time when Natina and her then boyfriend, Kurupt, started beefin’ with Kurupt’s ex, Foxy Brown. The sophomore album finally did drop over in Japan in 2002 and hit iTunes five years later in 2007.
During this time, the group’s mentor was killed in a car accident in Honduras, and so this is about the time when Blaque’s sound seemed to change.
They weren’t able to catch the same kind of spark that their debut album had created, as their 2003 album, Torch, was shelved. The album saw two singles released, I’m Good and the song Ugly, which featured Missy Elliot, didn’t have that same appeal as 808 and Bring it All To Me.
So what happened to them?
Natina Reed had a small role in Bring It On, that cheerleader movie with Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst. She would later make headlines in 2010 and 2011 for alcohol related arrests in Georgia. Sadly, she died in when she was struck by a car.
Shamari Fears-DeVoe married New Edition’s Ronnie DeVoe in 2006 and owns a Zen Massage Center. Although she is signed to Darkchild Records, she has yet to release any music.
Brandi Williams was the only member of the group to release any music since Blaque’s split, the song is called Love It. She went on to marry entrepreneur, Jay Harris in 2009.
