It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a decade since the sultry sound of Sade has soothed our souls and freed our imagination.
Sade’s “Flower” was officially released this at midnight just in time to usher in the movie “A Wrinkle in Time”. Director Ava DuVernay announced in February that the singer agreed to make a song for the movie and the woman who brought you “Selma” turned childlike with glee. DuVernay was so excited that she shared the news in a tweet saying, “I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway. She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget. Proud to announce that Sade has created an original song for WRINKLE IN TIME. It’s entitled ‘Flower of the Universe.’ And it’s a dream come true.”
“A Wrinkle in Time” stars Oprah Winfrey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Chris Pine(Star Trek) in the surrealistic sci-fi story of a 13 year old Meg Murry (played by Storm Reid) who is drawn into a mind-bending journey to find her missing scientist father played by Pine. Her mission takes her to new and dangerous lands in the universe where she requires the help of three fairy godmothers named Mrs. Which(Winfrey), Mrs. Whasit(Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling). Her fairy Godmothers will help Meg wrinkle time and space to transport her to lands unknown where she will have to brave powerful evils to save her father and get back home to Earth.
The film is drawing a low critic score on Rotten Tomatoes of 43, but audiences love it enough to score give it an 85.
And few critics dare give songstress Sade a low score on her vocals.
There are two versions of the song—one is an acoustic dream that will gently lull you to sweet relaxation and chill mode. The second version is a remix that critics describe as livelier translation with a hip-hop beat. Both are classic Sade.
DuVernay’s “Wrinkle in Time” opens March 9 in theaters nationwide. Until then, here’s the official video of the song “Flower” featuring the inimitable Sade…ENJOY!
