The 70th Emmy Awards nominations were announced Thursday morning and there were some easily expected contenders…and a few long shots to make the list.
It’s become as normal as 98° weather in the summer in the south for HBO to rack up on nominations. This year is no different. The premium channel’s Starks and Lannisters from”Game of Thrones” have to battle it out with “Westworld’s” Bernard and the man in Black to see walks away the winner in Outstanding Drama category. The HBO shows will also go up against three other shows including last year’s winner”The Handmaid’s Tale.
As usual, HBO picked up a lot of nominations…a total of 108 for 2018. But not so usual, HBO is in second place for nominations. This year’s leader of the pack is streaming service Netflix with a total of 112 nominations which also has two shows vying for Outstanding Drama–“Stranger Things” and “The Crown”.
Some other top categories and nominations include:
- Outstanding Comedy Series Donald Glover’s “Atlanta”will be going up Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson and Laurence Fishburne in “Black-ish”
- Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Singer/composer John Legend is use to winning at the Grammy Awards where he’s a ten time winner, but this time he’s in foreign territory as he’s up for a top award for his role in “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert”. People Magazine says Legend is “one single trophy away from achieving Hollywood legend status” making him one of only 12 stars to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
- Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Regina King is nominated for role in the American crime drama series that follows the people involved in investigating the death of a Black teen in Jersey who is killed when a White police officer runs over him. King played Latrice Butler.
- Lead Actor in a Drama Series Two powerhouse favorites are in the field of contenders for this category. Sterling K. Brown walked away a winner last year for his role in “The People v. O.J. Simpson”, this year his role as Randall Pearson on the NBC drama “This Is Us” for which he’s already garnered an Emmy.
Brown will be battling it out against another Emmy winner, Jeffrey Wright who stars as Bernard Lowe on HBO’s hit show “Westworld”. Wright was nominated last year in the OUtstanding Supporting Actor category. Both Brown and Wright are going up against actors from their respective shows(Ed Harris,”Westworld” and Milo Ventimiglia “This Is Us”) as well as actors from Netflix’s “Ozark” and FX’s “The Americans”
Also nominated this year are Thandie Newton, “Westworld”, Trevor Noah for “The Daily Show”, Issa Rae, “Insecure” and Tracee Ellis Ross “Black-ish”.
