The horrors of Hurricane Harvey are becoming devastatingly clearer with each drop of rain. Thirty people feared dead as of this writing, another 35-thousand people forced from their homes by rising waters. And the worst is far from over… early Wednesday morning, Harvey hit landfall for a second time promising more devastation before its eventually downgrade to tropical storm status by Wednesday night.
The crisis is showing us the best of people, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has raised $5 million in relief funds after putting up the first $100k out of his own pocket. Other famous Texans are pitching in as well including Houston’s most celebrated hometown daughter Beyonce. On Tuesday night, the singer issued a statement that she was helping relief efforts through her BeyGood organization and that she was coordinating efforts with local pastor Rudy Rasmus who confirms, “She’s starting out with a significant donation, and that donation is getting us to launch out into some areas that help us more effectively impact the communities that have been the most affected. She has, over the years, been very generous to our cause, and we continue to work together. She has been a huge benefactor to our efforts here in Houston, Texas.”
Celebs who don’t call Texas home are also putting their money where their hearts lie and are coming to the rescue with cash. Rapper T.I. said he would be donating $25k and singer Chris Brown is reportedly donating $100k. Both celebs said they would be donating through organizations other than Red Cross because they are skeptical that the money would reach those hurting the most.
Comedian Kevin Hart was one of the first celebrities to respond to the cries for help with a $25k donation which he has now doubled and a challenge to others to step up. Several celebs answered Hart’s challenge with a dollar for dollar match including D.J. Khaled, Nicki Minaj and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who even issued a challenge to his fans.
The biggest single donation to come from a Hollywood celeb at this point is from actress Sandra Bullock who reportedly donate $1 million of her own money to the cause. It is heartwarming to see all the good that can come from caring people during a crisis.
If you want to help thru a donation, you can go directly to the American Red Cross . You can also text the word ‘HARVEY” to 90999 to make a $10 or you can call 1-855-99-GIVE to phone in donation.
