The  2017 Hip Hop Awards on BET was the trending item Tuesday night on social media long after all the awards had been handed out.

It proved to be a big night for Bronx rapper Cardi B whose “Bodak Yellow” snatched the top spot on Billboard a couple of weeks ago. She’s the first solo female rapper to hit No. 1 since Lauryn Hill did it in 1998.  Cardi was the artist who walked away with the most awards including Single of the Year, Best Mixtape, Best New Hip-Hop Artist and Hustler of the Year.  Not bad for a former stripper who lyrically boasts,  “I don’t dance now, I make money moves”.

It was also a big night for Kendrick Lamar who racked up Album of the Year for “Damn”,  Best Hip-Hop Video for his song “Humble”, Hot Ticket Performer and Lyricist of the Year.

While the performers were there to collect the awards, the biggest  wins of the night may have gone to the audience which got to see everybody from Big Sean to SZA to Chris Brown hit the stage. Some were emotional like Mary J. who you know was singing about the h*ll she’s been thru since announcing her divorce…others were just fun like DJ Khaled who truly seemed “Grateful” to be there as he performed his hit “I’m the One” while holding his son in his arms.  But they all were entertaining.  So many acts to choose from, but TRN has pared down the list to a few of the most talked about. Here are 3 Top Performances from BET’s 2017 Hip Hop Awards

#3 Time for a little Xcape   Yeah, we all tune in to see the hottest acts topping the charts today, but it’s always brings a special feeling to take  a trip back in the day to hear some of the classics.  That’s what audiences got when LaTocha and Tamika Scott, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle and Kandi Burruss united on stage as Xscape to serenade fans.  The 90’s quartet had six top 10  hits including “Just Kick’ It”, “My Little Secret” and “The arms of the One Who Loves You” before breaking up in 2002.  They reunited again two years later but it was shortlived.  Earlier this year, an Atlanta radio show reunited the singers hoping the third time was the charm…and the girls officially announced their reunion complete with a comeback tour.  After being apart for several years, the four ladies were in sync as they took the stage at the hip hop awards to perform “Understanding”…

#2 DJ Khaled & Son   As if bringing a boat on stage wasn’t enough to win the crowd over, DJ Khaled went into the audience to add his adorable little son to the performance to make sure no could resist.  Khaled received the award for Best Collabo, Duo or Group, MVP of the Year and reminding the crowd with a performance “I’m the One” how he earned that DJ of the Year award.

#1 “The Storm”   But the most talked about performance of the night is still trending on IG and Twitter thanks to Eminem’s freestyle.  The Detroit rapper unleashed a storm of fury as commentary aimed at the President.  The internet has been applauding the rapper and repeating the rhymes in memes all day…

It wasn’t a live performance, but the video spoke the frustrations and minds of millions as Eminem addressed social concerns issues like hypocrisy and racism under this administration.  With no music to ease the verses, “The Storm” hit with the force of a hurricane— raw and hard core. Here’s Eminem’s “The Storm”…
