After a week of headlines on crazy politics, hateful racists and police shootings, let’s go into this first weekend in August with a little good news.
Here are four people doing fantastic things that make us smile, warm our hearts or inspire us. For being such fantastic people, they’ve earned a spot on TRN’s Friday’s Fantastic Four.
11 Year Old Turned Being Bullied into Big Buck$ Kheris Rogers is a beautiful little girl with big eyes full of hope. Those eyes were filled with tears when others teased and taunted her because of her chocolate complexion saying things like you’ve been “in the oven too long” and comparing her to a “dead roach”. When the words weren’t mean enough, students began to threaten her physically. Kheris’ mom moved her to different schools, but bullies always found her daughter. Finally, big sis stepped in to help Kheris. The two came up with a way to boost Kheris’ esteem and bank account at the same time…#FlexinInHerComplexion. After the sisters introduced the idea on social media, they quickly trended and picked up half a million likes so this hashtag was destined to end up on tshirt. Kheris says #Flexin’ in my complexion means “it doesn’t matter what other people think about you, it’s what you think about yourself and you don’t let anybody tell you different.” Celebs like singer Alicia Keys and “Black Panther” actress Lupita Nyong’o joined the girl power movement posting pics sporting #FlexininherComplexion. Rapper Snoop dog even praised Kheris in a post saying”bullied about her dark skin…instilling confidence in other young girls facing the same.” Kheris was featured on CBS national news and was the youngest singer ever to participate in NY’s Harlem Fashion Week. Her sister says requests for the shirts are averaging about 100 orders a day and so far, Kheris has sold over 10k shirts. Now the 11-year old says when she looks in the mirror she is no onger is brought to tears or wishing she had lighter skin. All she sees now is “Black beauty“.
Look! Up in the Alabama Sky! It’s History Being Made! Second Lt. Kayla Freeman is soaring these days and it’s not just because she graduated from Fort Rucker’s Army Aviation School recently. Freeman is the first black female pilot to ever fly in the Alabama National Guard. Retired Colonel Christine Knighton (the first Black female from Georgia to earn wings) had the honor of pinning on Freeman’s aviator wings. A guard spokesperson cited Freeman as a shining example that the Georgia Guard takes “the ideals of equal opportunity very seriously” and that the guard doesn’t “see race or gender” but “potential”. Freeman is prepared for deployment to the Mid East where she will serve as a platoon leader in Alabama National Guard’s 1-169th Aviation Battalion.
A Mind is Terrible Thing to Waste The United Negro College Fund slogan is still inspiring people forty years after it was first adopted. It inspired one North Carolina businessman to donate one million dollars to students who enroll in the state’s historically black colleges or universities. The benefactor is the founder of international investment Eli Global, Greg Lindberg. His firm will work with N.C. Legislative Black Caucus to screen eligible applicants and choose recipients. A spokesperson for Eli Global says the donation “allows us to raise diverse talent and increase diversity within our own workforce.” Five students will be chosen each year over the next five years to receive the $40,000 dollarships($10k annually). The students must be majoring in business or a business related field and enrolled in one of NC’s ten HBCUs.
Precious Moments Too many tragic stories hinge on dead beat or absentee dads. Ricky is the polar opposite of that and a shining example of a dedicated father. When his 14 year old daughter Nevaeha dream dress for 8th grade prom was a little out of their price range, the child was beyond heartbroken. Dad Ricky already works three jobs to keep food on the table and the household budget is already stretched to its limit. People always talk about mothers lifting cars off their children in moments of extreme pressure, but dads can move heaven and earth…and bills to make something happen for their daughters. Just when Nevaeha thought all hope was lost, Dad swooped in with the dress. The dress may have been expensive, but Navaeha’s reaction when Dad surprised her with it was priceless. Fortunately Mom was there to record it all in a video that has gone viral.
