The world has been waiting on a film that properly honors the short, but legendary life of the late Aaliyah Haughton. The singer passed away in a plane crash when she was just 22 years old, but she accomplished so much in those 22 years and now the time has come to show her fans the details of the life that she lived.
While it is refreshing to finally see a movie about Haughton’s life, the issue of who will play the leading role has been a controversial topic. Disney star Zendaya Coleman will play the role of Aaliyah Haughton, and the responses to that have not been all positive.
The main issue for fans is that any African-American actress could have played Haughton’s character before Coleman became the final choice. The norm for biographies is that the selected actor/actress resembles the main character in some sort of way.
J. Lo resembled Selena; Yaya DaCosta resembles Whitney Houston; Keke Palmer, Lil Mama and Drew Sidora resembled the members of TLC. For some fans, Coleman just does not fit the bill.
One fan tweeted: “But why is Zendaya playing Aaliyah? There are plenty of other actresses that they could’ve used.”
Some fans are concerned that Coleman will not do the role as much justice as a seasoned actress that may have even known Haughton would, but Coleman is still excited that she snagged the role.
She tweeted: “I’m just a 17 year old girl who got cast to play one of her biggest inspirations #positive.”
Coleman also said: “”A lot of people say I’m not black enough. Half black is just enough. It doesn’t matter what color you are, it’s about how you portray the character. For those that don’t know, Angela Bassett and Tina Turner, they look nothing alike but she was that character so I think that’s what it’s all about.”
No matter what the opinions of fans may be, Coleman is definitely playing the role. Only time will tell if she can step up to the plate and prove everyone wrong.
